Class of 1920
1919 - 1920 Season
Ephrata High School Tiger Football
Despite the laughs this Ephrata team got when it visited other schools (because of its ragged appearance), the Tigers closed the 1920 football season undefeated. It won over the Ephrata Athletic Club, Almira, Creston, Cashmere, and Waterville. The 16-member group was Ephrata High School’s first football team and was coached by EHS teacher Al Sorenson.
The school had no funds for uniforms and the team had to improvise. For their pants they substituted cut-off khaki pants and had cotton padding sewn in the front of the pants legs for protection. Their shoulder pads were created from leather horse collars with the horse collar’s padding used for kidney pads. Jerseys were purchased, but unfortunately nobody thought to have numbers put on them. The helmets were also purchased and came in all sizes and colors – some sat on top of the player’s head and other helmets came almost down over the player’s shoulders. Shoes and socks were whatever the player had handy.
The only senior on the team was Earl Hough who graduated with the class of 1920. He was also the only boy in a class numbering seven. The youngest member of the football team was eighth-grader Paul Thomas from the class of 1924.
